Did you know it wasn't even invented at the same time or by the same person who invented the soprano Bb clarinet? It was invented by Adophe Sax, the same guy who invented- you guessed it- the saxophone! So while many things are the same as soprano clarinet, there are some quirks to the bass clarinet we have to learn.
Does your instrument work?
First, let's check those low keys. Bass clarinets are notorious for having leaky low keys, and that makes the instrument harder to play. Ask your band teacher to set up a time to check it out or send your instrument in to the repair shop. If you are having lots of trouble playing low notes or crossing the break, and your embouchure, air support, and hand position are good, you probably have leaky keys.
While you're working on your scales and arpeggios, we also suggest checking out 35 Technical Studies for Alto and Bass Clarinet by William E. Rhoads. It's a challenging and very helpful way to build technique! Some more great books specifically for bass clarinet include the Bass Clarinet Scale book by Martin Arnold, The Bass Clarinet Method by Jean Marc Volta, and 25 Progressive Studies by Pedro Rubio.
